Calling All Hands!
Mystic Seaport America's Cup 12 Meter Regatta Saturday, July 21, 2012 Noon–6:30 p.m.
Newport, RI
For the fourth year in a row, Mystic Seaport is partnering with America's Cup Charters of Newport, RI to offer an exhilarating afternoon of racing aboard a classic 12 Meter yacht on Saturday, July 21. You've seen these legendary boats compete for sailing's most coveted prize, the America's Cup. Now you can join the crew to compete head-to-head in picturesque Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.
Featured yachts will include Ted Turner's famous American Eagle; Columbia, the first 12 Meter class America's Cup winner in 1958; Intrepid, the legendary two-time winner in 1967 and 1970; Nefertiti, the 1962 America's Cup contender; and Weatherly, the 1962 America's Cup winner.
Prior sailing experience is not required. America's Cup Charters specializes in working with sailors of all levels and they are experts at involving everyone in the racing. The professional sailing crews will match your skills with a sailing position and show you what to do. You'll practice trimming, jibing, and coming about prior to racing. Then the racing begins, culminating in a final victory lap around Newport Harbor. Please note that all crew members take part in the competitive racing: this is not a leisurely sail! After racing, a post-race celebration will include a complimentary drink and hors d'oeuvres at the Newport Harbor Hotel for you and your guests.
Space is limited to 12 crew members per team, so be sure to sign up early to get the boat of your choice. Sailing positions are $335 per person ($360 for non-members). Registration includes free parking in Newport from 8 a.m. to midnight, racing aboard a 12 Meter from 1–5 p.m., and a post-race celebration. Participants are asked to check in at noon. Reservations must be made by June 15 to confirm the race.
