-OPERATION SAIL (OPSAIL) 2012 CONNECTICUT WILL TAKE PLACE
06-08 JUL AND COMMEMORATES THE BICENTENNIAL OF THE WAR OF 1812.
US NAVY AND US COAST GUARD SHIPS, SAILORS, AND MARINES WILL BE SUPPORTING THE EVENT AND ITS MANY FAMILY-FUN ORIENTED FESTIVITIES.
-KEY EVENTS THAT MAY INTEREST NAVY TEAM NEW LONDON MEMBERS AND FAMILIES INCLUDE:
-FRIDAY, 06 JUL:
(1) EIGHTEEN PARTICIPATING OPSAIL SHIPS WILL ANCHOR IN NIANTIC BAY TO TAKE PART IN A KICK-OFF EVENT THAT INCLUDES A NAVY AMPHIBIOUS LANDING CRAFT STORMING THE BEACH. A LANDING CRAFT AIR CUSHION (LCAC) FROM THE NAVY DOCK LANDING SHIP, USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50), WILL MAKE AN AMPHIBIOUS LANDING ON NIANTIC'S HOLE IN THE WALL BEACH AT 4PM. THE LCAC WILL ROLL-OFF OF A HIGH MOBILITY MULTIPURPOSE WHEELED VEHICLE (HMMWV).
(2) THE LANDING WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A WELCOME CEREMONY IN THE ADJACENT MCCOOK PARK. THE PUBLIC WILL BE ABLE OBSERVE THE LCAC LANDING FROM MCCOOK PARK AND TOUR THE LCAC AND HUMVEE AT HOLE IN THE WALL BEACH. THE PUBLIC MAY ALSO MEET AND GREET OPSAIL CREWS DURING THE EAST LYME OPSAIL FOOD STROLL STARTING AT 6:30 PM IN DOWNTOWN NIANTIC.
B. SATURDAY, 07 JUL:
(1) AMERICA'S TALL SHIP, THE COAST GUARD BARQUE EAGLE (WIX 327) WILL LEAD USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50) AND A PARADE OF 22 SHIPS UP THE THAMES RIVER TO MOORINGS IN NEW LONDON. THE OFFICIAL PARADE UP THE THAMES RIVER WILL BEGIN AT 10 AM, WHEN EAGLE ROUNDS NEW LONDON LEDGE LIGHT AT THE MOUTH OF NEW LONDON HARBOR. IN ADDITION TO USS CARTER HALL, FOUR YARD PATROL CRAFT FROM THE UNITED STATES NAVY ACADEMY WILL REPRESENT THE NAVY AND PARTICIPANT IN OPSAIL CONNECTICUT EVENTS. REPRESENTING THE U.S COAST GUARD IN ADDITION TO EAGLE WILL BE 87-FOOT COASTAL PATROL BOATS SAILFISH AND RIDLEY, BUOY TENDER JUNIPER (WLB 201), AND ICEBREAKER MORRO BAY (WTGB 106).
(2) AT 11 AM, THERE WILL BE A FLYOVER OF THE PARADE BY US COAST GUARD AIRCRAFT.
(3) THE US COAST GUARD BAND WILL HOLD A FREE AND OPEN, PRE-FIREWORKS CONCERT AT FORT TRUMBULL STATE PARK AT 7:30 PM.
(4) A THAMES RIVER FIREWORKS EXTRAVAGANZA WILL TAKE PLACE AT 9:15 PM.
C. SUNDAY, JUL 08:
(1) A COAST GUARD SEARCH AND RESCUE DEMONSTRATION WITH A HELICOPTER AND SMALL BOAT WILL TAKE PLACE JUST OFF THE FORT TRUMBULL STATE PARK PIER IN THE THAMES RIVER AT 11 AM.
(2) THE NAVY BAND NORTHEAST WILL HOLD FREE AND OPEN CONCERT AT FORT TRUMBULL STATE PARK AT 5 PM.

Mystic Seaport - July 4th Special

Mystic Seaport Celebrates Independence Day with Discounted Admission Everyone to Pay Youth Price on July 4th

Mystic, Conn. – It is all about the kids this Independence Day at Mystic Seaport. To help celebrate the holiday, the Museum will discount its admission ticket for the entire day of July 4th and offer everyone the youth price of $15 (children ages 5 and under are free). The regular adult rate is $24.

Admission includes all special Independence Day activities as the Museum transports visitors back to 1876. Highlights include the 27th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry re-enacting Civil War military exercises, an old-fashioned spelling bee, patriotic hat-making for children, an Independence Day parade at 1 p.m. with a special section for kids to participate, and a rousing 1876 Independence Day ceremony followed by a period concert featuring the Mystic Silver Coronet Band on the Museum’s village green.

In the afternoon, visitors can play croquet and other 19th-century lawn games with costumed residents of 1876 Mystic and watch live theatrical performances by the Mystic Seaport TaleMakers troupe.

Museum exhibits will be open and for an additional fee visitors are invited to take in a planetarium show, go for a cruise on the Mystic River, or rent a boat from the Museum’s fleet of rowboats and small sailboats.

To close the day, the local Mystic rock band Barefoot Truth will perform an evening concert on the green. Mixing the sounds of folk, rock, jazz, and reggae, with lyrics full of “unbridled optimism,” the band has crafted a distinctive sound and has a loyal following in the area. Barefoot Truth will play from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $15 per person ($10 for Mystic Seaport members) and are available online or at the gate. Youth 12 and under are free. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a blanket or chairs for seating.  Picnic dinners are welcome. However, bringing alcoholic beverages onto the grounds of Mystic Seaport is not permitted. Food and drink, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase and the Galley Restaurant will have extended hours.

Please note the July 4th discount admission cannot be combined with other discounts or offers.

Check out our Monday Night Kool101 Classic Car Cruise Night on June 25. Bring the whole family. On Tuesday night June 26,  join us for the Groton Cinemas Beach Blanket Movie Series featuring We Bought The Zoo.  This film is based on a true story.  When his teenage son gets into trouble Damon gives up a lucrative job to move his family to a zoo!  This movie is rated PG and will start at sunset.



On Wednesday night June 27, at 7:00 the Boardwalk Magic Series continues with magic by Bill Hogland.  His show is fun for the whole family. There is lots of audience participation....your sides will hurt with laughter and you will all be amazed with his magic.



On Thursday night, June 28, Bill Rinoski's Sock Hop continues from 6:30-9:30 on the boardwalk stage.  Bill does so much to keep the kids jumping and winning so many prizes.



On Friday night June 29, great music plus FIREWORKS, starting with Steve Elci and Friends on the boardwalk stage at 8:00.  We know that Steve has been working on some new music and video so we can't wait to see and hear his latest.  He is a must see for all kids.   At 9:00, we'll enjoy the first FIREWORKS show for Ocean Beach Park this summer. 

On Saturday night June 30 the Boardwalk comes alive when Q105 presents Karaoke on the boardwalk stage.  The show goes from 6:30-9:00.  Kids are invited to participate first.

On Sunday July 1, make your own two-fer-one mini golf coupons and we'll honor them all day. Present your own coupon and pay one for one person while the second plays FREE.
