Free Admission @ Mystic Seaport

Free Admission
to Police, Fire, EMT and Ambulance Personnel

(ITT sell discounted tickets also to this attraction year round)

First Responders Weekend to Feature Wide Range of Family Activities

Mystic, Conn. — All active police, fire, EMT and ambulance personnel will receive free Museum admission during First Responders Weekend at Mystic Seaport Saturday through Monday, September 3-5, from 9 to 5 pm

Free admission will be extended to all first responder personnel with proper identification as a way of saying “thank you” for their dedicated community service. Family members of personnel will receive the Museum’s discounted group admission rate: adult $19; youth (ages 6-17); $10.50 and free for children ages 5 and under.

First Responders Weekend recognizes the work of present day emergency personnel, and celebrates the people, methods, and vehicles involved in maritime rescues in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

“In the wake of Tropical Storm Irene, we appreciate more than ever the important work these people do to keep us safe during times of crisis. Offering them the opportunity to come and enjoy Mystic Seaport is our way of giving back,” said Steve White, president of Mystic Seaport.

Plans for the weekend include: hands-on activities such as a bucket brigade, a man-overboard drill, and a breeches buoy rescue demonstration; historic apparatus on display including antique fire engines, a horse-drawn ambulance, and the fireboat John J. Harvey; rescue animal demonstrations by the Newfoundland Club of New England and K-9 police dogs; designated times for visitors to listen to real-life stories by first responders.

A highlight of the weekend will be the fireboat John J. Harvey from New York City. When launched in 1931, the Harvey was described as "the most powerful and most efficient marine fire fighter in the world."  In her 70-year career, the Harvey battled numerous fires, including the 1943 blaze that destroyed the French passenger liner S.S. Normandie. On September 11, 2011, the Harvey was pressed back into service, and for more than 80 hours, joined other New York City fireboats in providing water at the site of the World Trade Center tragedy. Now retired, the Harvey hosts frequent free public trips in New York Harbor and other nearby waters. While she is here guests will be able to board to boat for tours. They will also be doing water spraying demonstrations, weather permitting.

The First Responders Weekend discount applies to general admission only. The offer cannot be combined with any other discount and is subject to change. Food, drink and special activity fees will be available for purchase at regular prices.

Blue Star Museums Blog has posted a new item, 'What's on View at MoMA'

Blue Star  Museums Blog has posted a new item, 'What's on View at MoMA'

August 31, 2011
New York, New York

By Ann Waller Curtis

Summer---and the Blue Star Museums program---may be winding down, but you still have a few days to savor the treasures of some of the finest museums in America.
Heading to New York for the long holiday weekend? Be sure to visit The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and experience some of the best that contemporary art has to offer.

Founded in 1929 as an educational institution, MoMA benefited from growing support for a museum dedicated exclusively to modern art, moving and expanding several times before landing in its current location. The first gift to the museum was modest---eight prints and one drawing---but the museum’s collection has quickly become into one of the premier modern art collections in the world.
MoMA seeks to honor its origins by offering an array of educational programs and events to accompany its exhibitions.

With extended summer hours and a jam-packed exhibition schedule, MoMA offers something for everyone: film, design, performance art, or the more traditional museum mediums of painting and sculpture.

Talk to Me: Design and Communication Between People and Objects (July 24, 2011 – November 7, 2011)

Looking to grow a few inches before the end of the summer? MoMA can help. Step into a pair of robotic shoes and use the accompanying iPhone app to become taller---or shorter. MoMA’s much-buzzed about exhibition Talk to Me creates a unique, remarkably relevant dialogue between visitors and objects, machine and man. The highly interactive exhibit is appropriate in today’s technology and information-driven world, where we seem to converse as much with our iPhones, laptops, and iPads as we do with each other. These devices and others are outlined in the clever “Hierarchy of Digital Distractions,” a food pyramid-inspired chart that ranks the distractability levels of what have now become routine intrusions. This poster is one of the 194 objects included in the exhibit, each of which has its own hashtag and QR code so the viewer can learn more either on the spot or once they get home. React, interact, and interface your way through this challenging and timely exhibit!

Jay Leno August 27, 8:00pm, MGM Grand Theater Program: Before Jay Leno followed in the footsteps of legendary NBC late-night hosts Steve Allen, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson as the host of the Emmy Award-winning and top-rated "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," he did comedy. Leno continues to keep in touch with people by shaking hands and getting "one-on-one" time with audiences all over the country, whether he takes the stage at a small club or at his weekly shows in Vegas. Perhaps this is why he continues to exude the "everyman" style and personality that have helped him earn millions of fans worldwide. He has been touted as one of the nicest people in show business and undeniably the hardest working--a winning tandem for the man who says: "Anyone can have a life-careers are hard to come by!"
