Lichen Walk

They grow on our roofs and old cars, on trees, bare soil and rocks-even inside of some rocks.but what are they? This program will introduce participants to the world of lichens. We will learn what they are, where to find them and how they grow. The three basic growth forms will be introduced and discussed and information on lichen diagnostics (key features for identification) and lichen identification will be learned. The field walk will point out several species of lichens, and will provide information on ecological and environmental aspects of lichens. Some resource materials will be provided. From the intersection of Routes 6 and 97 in Hampton, go west 1.4 miles and take a right onto Potter Road. The Goodwin Forest Conservation Education Center and the Goodwin State Forest were gifts to the people of Connecticut from James L. Goodwin, one of Connecticut's first professional foresters. Together the Center and Forest include 2,000 acres of forests and habitats, 14 miles of hiking and multi-purpose trails, 3 large ponds and a nature museum. The Center is managed jointly by the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and The Connecticut Forest & Park Association, Inc.
