Military Chess Season!


ACTIVE DUTY ONLY!

THE 2012 MILITARY CHESS SEASON IS APPROACHING FAST. IF YOU
PLAY CHESS AND ARE INTERESTED IN COMPETING FOR A SPOT ON THE ALL-NAVY
CHESS TEAM, MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR THE FOLLOWING EVENTS:
A. 2-4 MARCH 2012, ALL-NAVY CHESS QUALIFIER, NAS OCEANA, VIRGINIA
BEACH, VA
B. SUMMER 2012, INTERSERVICE MILITARY CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS,
SAN ANTONIO, TX, HOSTED BY AIR FORCE
C. AUGUST 2012, 23RD NATO CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP, FRANCE
2. THE ALL-NAVY CHESS QUALIFIER WILL BE HELD 2-4 MARCH 2012 AT NAS
OCEANA IN VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. TWELVE OF THE TOP RATED NAVY CHESS
TEAM APPLICANTS WILL BE SELECTED TO COMPETE FOR A SPOT ON THE
SIX-MEMBER ALL-NAVY CHESS TEAM. THE ALL-NAVY CHESS TEAM WILL ADVANCE
TO THE INTERSERVICE CHESS TOURNAMENT.
3. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ALL-NAVY CHESS QUALIFIER, FIVE PLAYERS
WILL BE SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN A SIMULTANEOUS EXHIBITION AGAINST
CHESS GRANDMASTER, SUSAN POLGAR. THE EXHIBITION WILL KICK OFF THE
NORFOLK INITIATIVE FOR CHESS EXCELLENCE (NICE) ALL-GIRL VIRGINIA
QUEEN'S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP ON 2 MARCH 2012.
4. THE INTERSERVICE CHESS TOURNAMENT WILL BE HOSTED BY AIR FORCE IN
SAN ANTONIO, TX PRIOR TO AUGUST 2012, DATES TBD. THE ALL-NAVY CHESS
TEAM WILL COMPETE WITH PLAYERS FROM THE OTHER MILITARY SERVICES FOR A
SPOT ON THE SIX-MEMBER INTERSERVICE CHESS TEAM. THE INTERSERVICE CHESS
TEAM WILL ADVANCE TO THE NATO CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
5. THE NATO CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS WILL BE HELD IN FRANCE IN AUGUST
 2012,
DATES TBD. THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL MILITARY COMPETITION.
6. ACTIVE DUTY NAVY, COAST GUARD AND PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE PERSONNEL INTERESTED IN COMPETING FOR A SPOT ON THE ALL-NAVY CHESS TEAM MUST SUBMIT AN APPLICATION NLT 27 JANUARY 2012. APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE
FOLLOWING ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: MUST BE ON ACTIVE DUTY WITH THE
NAVY, COAST GUARD OR PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE; MUST BE A U.S. CHESS
FEDERATION MEMBER IN GOOD STANDING; MUST HAVE A CURRENT, ESTABLISHED
U.S. CHESS FEDERATION RATING, OR BE IN THE PROCESS OF ESTABLISHING
RATING; AND MUST OBTAIN COMMAND AUTHORIZATION TO COMPETE IN THE NAVY
QUALIFIER, INTERSERVICE AND NATO TOURNAMENTS IF SELECTED TO ADVANCE
TO EACH LEVEL OF COMPETITION.
7. APPLICATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE MWR WEBSITE AT
WWW.NAVYMWR.ORG, UNDER CHESS OR BY CONTACTING CNIC FLEET AND FAMILY
READINESS RECREATION BRANCH (N923). ALL APPLICATIONS CAN BE SUBMITTED
DIRECTLY TO COMMANDER, NAVY INSTALLATIONS COMMAND (N923), 716 SICARD

8. INDIVIDUALS SELECTED TO COMPETE IN THE 2012 ALL-NAVY CHESS
QUALIFIER WILL BE NOTIFIED VIA PHONE CALL OR EMAIL NO LATER THAN 3
FEBRUARY 2012. ALL PERSONNEL SELECTED WILL TRAVEL ON INVITATIONAL
TRAVEL ORDERS ISSUED AND COORDINATED BY N923. AUTHORIZED TRAVEL,
LODGING AND MEAL ALLOWANCE REIMBURSEMENT WILL BE PAID TO PLAYERS
AFTER COMPLETION OF EACH LEVEL OF COMPETITION UPON SUBMISSION OF
NAF TRAVEL CLAIM TO N923.
