Learn Something New this Spring at Mystic Seaport

Discover a new craft, find a new hobby, refine a current skill, or learn  to sail on the beautiful Mystic River. Mystic Seaport is offering a wide variety of hands-on classes and programs this spring. Join our skilled Museum instructors as they share their expertise and take you on a new adventure!

Have you ever wondered how 19th-century mariners navigated the seas? Or perhaps, how to find latitude and longitude using simple observations of the altitude of the sun? Then register for one of the Treworgy Planetarium's class offerings. Featured courses include: Introduction to Coastal Navigation (February 25, March 3 and 17), Easy Introductory Celestial Navigation by the Noon Sun (March 31-April 1), Marine Weather Level II (April 21-22), and Celestial Navigation: 19th-Century Methods (May 5-6).

 Buckingham Hall Class<http://msm.mysticseaport.org/images/content/pagebuilder/Hearth_cooking_class.jpg> Dinner at the Buckingham's: Open Hearth Cooking Class Saturday, February 25 or Saturday, March 24, from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Roast, bake, stir, and sizzle your way through the preparation of a traditional 19th-century meal! Enjoy the fruits of your labor in the Museum’s beautiful Buckingham-Hall House. All materials are provided – just bring your curiosity and appetite. Class includes a delicious hearth-cooked supper, plus a copy of The American Frugal Housewife by Lydia Child.

 Sea Chanteys<http://msm.mysticseaport.org/images/content/pagebuilder/11423.jpg> Music of the Sea: Ballads, Chanteys and Songs of the Sailor Saturdays, March 24, 31 and April 7, 14, from 10 a.m. to noon

Sharpen your musical skills while exploring the rich connections between music and the sea. Led by the Museum's experienced chanteymen, this class will follow the functions of sea music in the work and lives of 19th-century sailors. The class includes musical instruction and hands-on work experience aboard ships and culminates in a performance at the Museum's Greenmanville Church. Registration includes a set of "Bones" and a "Songs of the Sailor" booklet and CD.

 Half Model Class<http://msm.mysticseaport.org/images/content/pagebuilder/half_model.jpg> Introduction to Half-Model Construction Saturday, March 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Learn the basics of half-hull construction by carving your own model of a classic sailboat. Following a demonstration of the basic techniques used to build a waterline-lift model, you'll begin working on your own model. Discussions of techniques, materials, tools, and finishes continue throughout the day as you work to complete your project. Then go home with a family heirloom!

 Varnishing Class<http://msm.mysticseaport.org/images/content/pagebuilder/varnishing.jpg> Varnishing Techniques for Traditional Boats Saturday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Learn how to protect your new or restored boat and keep it beautiful for years to come. This finishing class begins with discussions of appropriate materials, tools, and surface preparation. Then, you'll begin hands-on practice on sample boards in various stages of completion. Focus will be placed on techniques for bleaching, staining, and varnishing. All class materials are included.
